Obituary for Rev. Herman E. Pollard

Reverend Herman E. Pollard of Preston passed away on April 22, 2023, at Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT. He was born in New London, CT, on July 17, 1933, to the late Mamie Pollard and John H. Pollard. Herman graduated from Chapman Technical High School in New London. He received an Associate's Degree from Mitchell College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Christian Counseling from Kingsway Christian College and Theological Seminary, and certificates in Ministry from the Hartford Seminary.

Herman served proudly in the U.S. Air Force as a medic in Newfoundland. He worked as a foreman chemical operator for Pfizer, Inc. for 32 years, retiring in 1992. He was also employed at the Ledyard Police Department for several years before retiring. In addition to maintenance, he served as the Chaplain, performing marriages, baptisms, and funerals, something he loved. Herman was ordained as a Minister in 2000 and was the Founder and Co-Pastor of In His Presence Ministries in New London.

A talented musician, Herman loved playing the piano and organ in Church, at weddings, funerals, and family gatherings. He was known for his strong faith, selfless devotion to his family, love of music, many volunteer activities, generosity, and overall kindness.

Herman was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his sons, Mary Catherine Knowles Pollard, in 1993; his parents; and his brother, John S. Pollard.

Herman was beloved and will be missed dearly by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Rev. Joyce Pollard of Preston; his sons Dwayne Pollard of New London and Bryan Pollard and his wife Alice of Middletown, CT; grandchildren Angela Pollard of Santa Barbara, CA, Gregory Pollard of Middletown, Emanuel Pollard and Dezirae Pollard of New Haven, and his sister-in-law Gertrude Pollard of Groton. Also mourning his loss are his wife, Joyce, and her children Robyn Jones of New Jersey, Kimberly Gomez-Yim (Chong) of Georgia, Michael Gomez (Shonda) of Connecticut, Shane Gomez of Massachusetts, and Antoinette Jones of Connecticut. He leaves numerous nephews, nieces, and extended family. In addition to his first wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother, John S. Pollard.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 29, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1 Garvin St, New London. Calling hours begin at 9 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Services will be live-streamed for close family and friends. The burial is private.
