Maybelle Heyward, age 77, of Bridgeport, Connecticut entered into eternal rest on Thursday April 21, 2022 at home surrounded by her loving family. Maybelle was born in Camden, SC on September 3, 1944 to the late Andrew and Maybelle Gardner. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined Sandhill Baptist Church in Garnett, SC. She attended Estill High School and later moved to Bridgeport, CT.

In 1957, Maybelle met the love of her life, Edward Heyward, Jr. They shared the joy of marital bliss in 1961. As everyone may know, she took her vows very seriously and didn’t play about her husband.

Maybelle was employed and retired from St. Joseph Manor as a CNA for over 30 years. She attended West End Tabernacle Church and spent a lot of time at the Eisenhower Senior Center where she was loved.

Maybelle, as all her close friends and family knew her was a queen, always known for her feisty nature. She loved to keep her hair done and look her best. She was always surrounded by her family, especially her grandkids, and always expressed her love and joy. During family time, we watched Wendy Williams, race cars and Western movies. She always found peace by listening to gospel music. During every family gathering she made sure we danced to “Step in the Name of Love.” In her leisure time she enjoyed crossword puzzles, making jewelry boxes and crocheting. One of her favorite places to attend was Captain’s Cove Seaport where she walked the boardwalk and shopped. She also loved going to the casino with her husband.

Maybelle was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Robert Lee, William and Henry Gardner; her children, Darrell and Edwina Heyward; her granddaughter, Myesha Hagood; 3 sisters-in-law, Doris, Minnie and Eva Mae Heyward; and 2 brothers-in-law, Otis & Jessie Heyward.

She is survived by her loving husband; her son, Mark Heyward (Tynisha); her brother, Andrew Gardner (Marci); her grandkids, Eric Heyward (Kimmora), Aishia Williams (Darnell), Scherlyn Garnett, Darleen Green (Jon), and Jarrett, Mark Jr and Marquese Heyward; 16 great-grandkids; 4 sisters-in-law, Ruby, Daisy, Gertrude and Naomi Heyward; one brother-in-law, Robert Heyward; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday April 29, 2022 at 11a.m at Lester Gee Funeral Home, 1390 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut. Family and friends may view at the funeral home at 10a.m until time of service. Interment will be held in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport, Connecticut.
