Obituary for Jessie "Sweet" Cooper

Jessie Flowers Cooper, known to others as “SWEET”, 78, of Gales Ferry, CT the daughter of the late Dennis Flowers Sr. and Carrie Dillard Flowers, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on July 15, 2022, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London, CT.

Jessie was born on May 6, 1944, in Memphis, TN. She spent her early years in Memphis, TN, and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1962. In 1963, she met and married Herthel Cooper and they moved to Connecticut where he continued his military career. She professed her hope in Christ at an early age at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. She became a member of Calvary Church of God in Christ in New London, CT where she served under Reverend Rogers for many years. She then moved and stayed at New Life Christian Fellowship in Ledyard, CT for many years ending with Pastor Johnny Burns Sr. She served faithfully as the Sunday School Superintendent/Teacher, Pastoral Committee Praise and Worship Singer, Elder Board, Senior Choir Member, and Greeter. She was a breath of fresh air and always greeted everyone with warm hugs and smiles as they would walk in the front door of New Life Christian Fellowship. While attending New Life Christian Fellowship, Jessie was an MIT graduate, and in 1990 she obtained her “Certificate of Biblical Studies” from Vision Christian University.

Jessie was predeceased by her Mother Carrie Dillard Flowers and Father Dennis Flowers Sr., her Brother Willie Flowers and her sister Grace Aldridge.

Jessie is survived by her loving husband of 59 years Herthel Cooper Sr, Son Herthel Cooper Jr. and wife Liz: Grandsons Jordan and Patrick Cooper, Daughter Tamora (Cooper) Void and her Husband John: Grand Daughters Tiana (Princess) De'Na Cooper and Ayanna Void, and Grandson Jonah Void. Jessie has three sisters: Pearl Johnson, Lillie Mixon, Zola Morris all of Memphis Tennessee. Four brothers, Henry Flowers and wife Marvis. Darrell Flowers and wife Janice all of Memphis, Tennessee, Dennis Flowers Jr. and wife Alvina from Los Angeles, Michael Flowers and wife Annette from West Covina, California. Sister-in-Laws: Barbara Kelly of Orlando, Florida, Debra Cooper Beard of Stockbridge, Georgia, and Gloria Flowers of West Covina, California. Brother-in-Law Vincent Kelly of Orlando, Florida. Spiritual Daughter Maegen Cooper of Groton CT, Special Friend Annette Fitch and Family of New London CT, Special Cousin Patricia Frame of Columbia CT; and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Godchildren, Other Family, and devoted friends.

A Celebration of Life is being held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, at New Life Christian Church, 1729 Center Groton Rd, Ledyard, CT. Services will be live streamed at https://www.facebook.com/nllcfct. Interment will follow at Avery Stoddard Cemetery, Gales Ferry, CT. Funeral services are entrusted to Lester Gee Funeral Home.
