Obituary for Diane Word
Diane (Drayton) Word, 80 yrs. old of New London, CT entered into eternal rest on June 17, 2023. She was born in Charleston, SC. on February 17, 1943 to the late Charles Drayton Sr. and Rebecca (Fordham) Drayton.
Diane Word came to CT at an early age to be near her siblings; she was a member of Pentecostal Rescue Mission COGIC. She was a strong, outgoing, independent woman who was well known to "tell it like it is," a caregiver, a salesperson, and a crossing guard for the City of New London. Diane enjoyed walking, crabbing, feeding the birds, and she had a passion for music; you always knew when her favorite tune was playing.
In 2019, Diane took ill, Harbor Village became her final home where she was known as "Nana."
Diane is survived by her 4 children, Charles Drayton, Denise Williams (Michael Williams), Josephine Savage "Josie," and Santina Drayton; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and siblings Janie Ladson, Hedy Jackson, Richardene Scott (Pastor Nathaniel Scott), and Emily Drayton (sister-in-law). Diane was predeceased by Anderson Drayton, Virginia Taylor, Charles Drayton, and Leroy Drayton.
Diane Word will be missed, but she will live on within the hearts of everyone she touched, nurtured, and encountered.
A viewing will be held Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Pentecostal Rescue Mission COGIC, 29 Blackhall St. New London, CT 06320, at 10:00 am; the funeral service will immediately follow.
