Obituary for Alice Jones-Belle

Alice Louise Jones-Belle was born on June 2, 1936 in Henderson, NC to the late Hilmon Wright and Bessie Lee Wright of Henderson, NC. Alice was born into a large and loving family with 15 brothers and sisters. In early childhood, Alice was baptized at Morningstar Baptist Church in Henderson, NC. Later, she became a lifetime member of Trinity Baptist Church, in the Bronx, NY.

Alice moved to New York City with her family circa 1946. She attended Jane Adam’s High School for Nursing and soon embarked on her lifelong career in the nursing field. With the help of her dear friend Anne Porter, Alice obtained a job at the Bronx Municipal Hospital in 1969, later known as Jacobi Hospital, working in the Labor & Delivery Department.

Alice was married to Lorenzo Jones in 1959 until his death in 1981. ‘Uncle Lorenzo” as his nieces and nephews affectionately called him, was full of life during family gatherings. They had one child from the union, Venessa Jones, of New London, CT, whom Alice dotted on and made sure she had everything she needed. After some time passed, Alice remarried to Harold Belle in 1990 until his passing in 2004. Mr. Belle was affectionately known as “granddad”.

Alice was dedicated to her family, and she loved children. She had a tremendously generous spirit. When she was not working, Alice showered her love and attention on her only child, Venessa, grandchildren Antione and James, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and others in her extended family. She was known as “grandma” to many children.

Alice retired in 1996 from Jacobi Hospital after 27 years of service and there was a surprise joint retirement ceremony for her and her friend Anne. Alice and Anne’s friendship continued to bloom over the next 25+ years, including after Anne moved to Tarboro, NC, where she currently resides. Alice’ life in retirement was filled with the joys of family, sharing her love, support and care for others. Alice cared for her grandkids, great grandkids, and many other children in her extended family circle. She had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, Antione and James, whom she thought the world of.

Alice also loved and cherished her relationship with her siblings. There were many gatherings where macaroni and cheese, fried chicken and corn bread passed around the table while talking and laughing late into the evening on holidays and family get togethers, including picnics and birthdays. Alice was known for making her delicious sweet potato pies at these family gatherings. There was a special cruise to Bahamas where many of Alice’s siblings and their families gathered in celebration.

We as the children, at these gatherings, would be running around and come into the room where the Aunts would be gathered. Suddenly they would stop talking, take a look at us, and we would know to go back to where we came from!

Alice is preceded in death by her parents Hilmon and Bessie Lee, spouses, Lorenzo and Harold, and her siblings William, Hilmon, Mary Lou, George Daniel, Annie Bell, Joe Samuel, Melvin Lee, Robert Edward, Martha Etta, Bessie Mae, Shirley Jean, Issaih, and Betty Jane.

Alice leaves to treasure her memory, her loving daughter Venessa Jones, her daughter’s fiancée, Perry Johnson, her grandsons, Antione Jones and James Jones, her great grandson, DeVante’ Jones, her great granddaughters Wizdom Jones and Niamoni Jones, her great-great granddaughter Londyn Jones, her sister Rebecca Rose Wright, her first cousins Edith, Viola, Truella Wright, Eddie, and Dorothy, her extended family of grandchildren including Nefertiti, Adrian, Tz’iah and Ezekiel and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 3p.m at Shiloh New London Church, 1 Garvin Street, New London, CT. Family and friends may view at the church at 2p.m until time of service. Interment will be private.
